A report
published by the food standards agency states that many
food manufacturers are mislabelling foods as 'homemade',
'natural' and 'pure'. The report, commissioned by the Food
Standards Agency, and produced by the food advisory committee,
states that "Labellers have a tendency to be economical
with the truth". They found examples of caterers using
the term 'homemade' for foods that have been purchased from
supermarkets but re-heated on the premises.
The
Food Standards Agency will be consulting with consumer groups,
manufacturers and consumers over the next three months to
provide tighter definitions of food labels. The FSA are
also proposing a prosecution mechanism that would be carried
out by local authorities. Any prosecutions would result
in being 'named and shamed' by the FSA.
