The
RMT (Rail Maritime and Transport union) announced that train
guards across the country will be striking soon. Almost
all members of the union across the majority of train companies
have agreed to strike on 25th June and 4th July 2001, with
the exception of WAGN, Thameslink, Gatwick, Great Eastern
and Isle of Wight. The guards are striking about the perceived
downgrading of their jobs over the past two years, specifically
the movement of some of their safety duties from their job
specification to that of the driver's. The RMT believes
that this change in responsibilities increases passenger
safety liability. The Association of Train Operating Companies
argue that striking is an inappropriate way of changing
the rules as there are internal mechanisms in place.
