The
AA (Automobile Association) state that there have been a
considerable number of errors in recording the vehicle types
and vehicle registration numbers of those caught on speed
cameras. The AA has been alerted to a number of people being
wrongly fined due to human and technological error. One
of the culprits is the DVLA and its apparently antiquated
system of recording vehicle ownership, resulting in previous
owners of the vehicles caught on camera, being fined. The
AA are currently reviewing the problem to get an idea of
the scale. The Association of Chief of Police Officers claim
that these errors are only a small margin of the total number
of people who are fined as a result of being caught on camera.
Comment: The AA also commented on the lack of communication
between the police and the faslely accused speeders. They
suggested this reflects a general lack of interest in the
upset and inconvenience these fines will cause some individuals.
There has been some discussion by the cynical press about
the police's lack of sympathy or interest in resolving this
issue, as all revenue from the speeding cameras goes directly
to the police forces.
