Goods
I Have Bought
When you buy
goods you enter into a contract with the retailer under The
Sale of Goods Act. For this reason a complaint about goods you have
bought should be directed to the retailer in question rather than
to the manufacturer of the goods. The Sale of Goods Act sets down
the rights of the consumer versus the retailer and along with other
legislation ( including the Trade Descriptions Act) represents your
statutory rights. It is worth familiarising yourself with
your statutory rights when considering making any type of complaint.
You can read about them in summary or in detail through our Know
Your Rights section.
If
you know the name of the retailer
you can access information on complaints procedures by using the
'complain to' box at the top left of this page. You will
be presented with the complaints procedure page for retailers, as
well as links to a variety of sources that can offer extra advice
or help if you need it. From this page you will be able to make
a complaint online, provided we have the name of the retailer in
our databases.
If
you don't know the name of the
retailer you can try browsing the
lists we provide to see if we might be able to trigger your memory.
Click on the Retail and Shopping icon on the top left of
this page, choose the subsector that best fits the description of
the goods you have bought and then browse through the list of companies
that will be displayed. Failing that, receipts and credit card transactions
should solve the mystery. Recent changes to the law have made it
easier to complain about goods that someone else has bought for
you, but again you will need to ascertain from where the goods were
purchased.
If you are
unable to remember the name of the retailer or are unable to contact
them for any reason, you can always take your complaint to your
local Trading Standards
Office or Citizens Advice
Bureau. They will give you free advice and may take your complaint
up for you.
To access general
complaints procedures on goods you have bought simply click on the
Retail
and Shopping icon on the left of this page, select the relevant
subsector and click on the nformation
point.
