Complaints Wizard

A Public Service

howtocomplain.com aims to make the complaints procedures in the public sector easy to follow. Most central and local Government departments have complaints procedures in place and these are accessible through the complaints procedures pages on this site. A complaints procedures page exists for all the major Government Departments and for the major public sector services (Education, Housing, Police, Roads etc.). These are accessible by clicking the Government icon on the menu to the left of this page.

In order to make a complaint online you must decide who you need to complain to. In the first instance this will be the provider of the public service: the menu below can help direct you. If you remain unsure who to complain to you can still view the procedures pages by clicking on the nformation points next to the subsectors within Government. Below is a list of some public services. If your complaint is relevant to one of these click on it:

Government policy
Government Departments (e.g. Home Office etc.)

Government Agencies (e.g. Passport Agency, Prison Service, Court Service etc.)
Political Parties
Traffic Wardens, Parking and Roadworks
Roadworks

Rubbish Collection
Planning Authorities
Environmental Health
Recreation

Schools
Social Services
Housing
Police

Government Policy and Government Departments:

Some government departments do solicit feedback on their policies and all have complaints procedures for issues of maladministration. Click on government and select the relevant government department from the subsector menu. This will give you access to the complaints procedure in place for the relevant Government department. Where possible you are able to send your complaint online.

To air your complaint publicly why not use our Open Forum facility. People can read and respond to comments you post on the message boards. Otherwise you are recommended to express your view to your local MP or to the minister in charge of the relevant department. To find your local MP Click here.

Government Agencies:

If your complaint involves a government agency, you can track down the complaints procedures via the relevant government department. For example, if it is the Passport Office you wish to complain to, click on government , then click on Home Office and you will be presented with a list of the Home Office's executive agencies. Click on Passport Office and you will be presented with the complaints procedure and the facility to complain online. Alternatively you can simply type the name of the agency in the 'complain to' box on the top left of the page (e.g. Passport in this example).

Political Parties:

With a general election looming it may be that you wish to voice your concerns or complaints to/about a political party. Click on government and then select political parties from the subsector menu. You can choose the party you wish to complain to. This will be followed by a page detailing the complaints procedure and the facility to complain online where available.

Traffic Wardens, Parking and Roadworks:

Local issues to do with roads and parking are dealt with by the local council therefore any complaint should be directed to them. Being a rather emotive subject we have included a separate complaint procedures page for these and it can be found by clicking on government and then clicking on the roads, roadworks and parking subsector. You will be prompted to select your local council or the relevant council after which you will be presented with a procedures page and the facility to complain online where possible. If your complaint concerns a highway, rather than a local road, the Highways Agency is responsible. You can also access the Highways Agency through the roads, roadworks and parking page as outlined above.

Rubbish Collection, Planning Authorities, Environmental Health, Recreation

All these are in effect council services and therefore any complaint should be directed to the local council (they will take it up with a sub contractor where applicable). If you click on the government icon from the menu on the left of this page and then on council services from the subsector list you will be presented with a list of councils from which to choose. Once you have selected your council you will be presented with a procedures page and the facility to complain online where possible.

Schools, Social Services, Housing, Police

We have separate, detailed procedures pages for each of these local services. Click on the government icon from the menu to the left of this page and select the relevant service from the subsector menu. You can then choose the relevant council, police authority etc. that you should complain to, providing it is in our databases. If this is the case then you will be presented with a procedures page and the facility to complain online where possible. If we do not have the name of the relevant authority or service provider you can still view the procedures page by clicking on the nformation point, although you will not be able to submit your complaint online. We are continually updating our databases and if you would like to bring an organisation to our attention please send an e-mail to us here.

Other

If we have omitted your particular complaint from this list, you are still able to find information and may be able to send your complaint through this site. By clicking the government icon from the menu on the left of this page you will be presented with 19 subsectors to choose from. Ultimately a central government or local authority will be responsible for handling any complaint you have about a public service and these are all available from the menus outlined above. If you are totally stuck then contact your local Citizens Advice Bureau (you can find yours here). If you would like to bring it to our attention then please send an e-mail to us here.
