A Media Issue

To make a complaint online, you need to pinpoint the appropriate organisation. However, in the vast world of media it may not be immediately obvious where to go, if you want to complain about a certain article, broadcast or advert. The procedures are quite straight forward and once you have been pointed in the right direction, resolution should be forthcoming.

If you know the name of the publication or regulatory body that you wish to complain to, you can use the 'complain to' box on the top left of this page to access recommended complaints procedures.

If you don't know the name of the organisation that you wish to complain to, you may find the topic you wish to complain about listed below. Here you can find a useful summary of the information available by clicking on the relevant link:

Newspapers and Magazines
Advertising
Internet Media
TV and Radio

Newspapers and Magazines: Complaints about the content of a newspaper article should be directed to the editor of the publication in question. You can search our database via the 'complain to' box for contact details of the relevant publication. As our complaints procedure guide outlines, you can take your complaint further by contacting the Press Complaints Commission. All contact details and advice are available on this site via 'Leisure and Media'.

Advertising: Adverts are well regulated, however in the event of a problem you can complain straight to the publication or broadcaster that carried the advert. The relevant regualtory bodies will deal with complaints about adverts that are misleading or offensive. The Advertising Standards Authority deals with advertisements that appear in non-broadcasting media, the ITC with broadcast (TV) advertisments, and the Radio Authority with broadcast (radio) advertisements. More information including contact details and advice are available on this site via 'Leisure and Media'.

Internet Media: Complaints about websites can be varied and it may be difficult to work out who to approach with a complaint. It is a relatively new medium so the complaints procedures remain a little unclear. However, a starting point is usually the webmaster whose details will be offered on the site itself. Matters of security of personal details can be addressed to the company in question or, if accredited, to the relevant trade association. All contact details and complaints procedures are accessible by clicking on 'Leisure and Media'.

TV and Radio: If you wish to make a complaint about a specific broadcast or broadcaster then you can simply use the 'complain to' box on the top left of this page to access contact details and complaint procedures in order to take your complaint further. TV and Radio companies have internal complaints procedures, however there are regulatory bodies that may take up your complaint if it is not dealt with satisfactorily on a local level. howtocomplain.com outlines the potential local resolution of complaints and the regulatory bodies that can seek redress, on your behalf, if the local attempts fail. Click on 'Leisure and Media' to access contact details and complaints procedures.

To access general complaints procedures on media issues simply click on Leisure and Media, select the relevant subsector and click on the nformation point.

As with all issues, you can contact your local Trading Standards office and Citizen's Advice Bureau for advice and information if you are unsure on what action to take.
