Local
Government Ombudsman
The
Local Government Ombudsmen (LGO) handle complaints related to 'maladministration'
(see below) by local authorities and cover a wide range of individual
services. There are three LGOs for England and separate Ombudsmen
for Scotland(SPSO), Wales and Northern Ireland. You will find links
to all the relevant local Ombudsmen below.
The Ombudsmen (LGO-England, LGO-Wales, SPSO or Northern Ireland
Ombudsman) services are free but they do insist you give the local
authority a chance to resolve a complaint before considering individual
cases. They also state that they do not get involved in a case where
you might disagree with a decision the local authority has made
if no maladministration has taken place.
For
your information the Oxford Dictionary's definition of maladministration
is "manage badly or improperly".
