Local Government Ombudsman

The Local Government Ombudsmen (LGO) handle complaints related to 'maladministration' (see below) by local authorities and cover a wide range of individual services. There are three LGOs for England and separate Ombudsmen for Scotland(SPSO), Wales and Northern Ireland. You will find links to all the relevant local Ombudsmen below.

The Ombudsmen (LGO-England, LGO-Wales, SPSO or Northern Ireland Ombudsman) services are free but they do insist you give the local authority a chance to resolve a complaint before considering individual cases. They also state that they do not get involved in a case where you might disagree with a decision the local authority has made if no maladministration has taken place.

For your information the Oxford Dictionary's definition of maladministration is "manage badly or improperly".
