Complaints procedures for Home Repairs and Improvements

General Comment - Plenty of links to further information have been given below if you are unsure of the procedures outlined here. At present the government is trying to crackdown on cowboy builders so advice and assistance is readily available from the DETR and Trading Standards specifically for these types of problems.
Step 1 -

Local resolution 1:

Any complaints about workmanship, delays and general dissatisfaction should initially be directed to the construction builders in question, the foreman most probably. If your complaint is not acted upon and an improvement is not made then proceed to step 2.

Also, if you have a complaint about work recently completed you should consult the foreman in question. If not applicable proceed to step 2.

Solar energy Installations: Complaints about installations should go to the installer in the first instance.

Step 2 -

Local resolution 2:

In the case of larger construction companies the builders will be accountable to those higher up. Contact the head office with your complaint and be clear on what resolution you would like. You may also wish to consider taking photographs in order to back up your claim.

Building companies that belong to the National Federation of Builders, House Builders Federation and the Construction Confederation, are all part of the "considerate construction scheme" which is designed to reduce disruption caused by construction.

Buildwork Warranties are issued by the NHBC to the clients of their members which ensures redress if defects occur in the first two years of construction.

Other building federations/associations will also carry guarantees of some description which provide the consumer with a complaint procedure and assurance against shoddy workmanship, for example the Federation of Master Builders.

Solar Energy Installations: Go to the Solar Energy Trade Association IF the installer is a member. If the installer isn't a member then you need to go to your local Trading Standards. The Trade Association, however, can provide you, for a fee, with an Independent Expert Report. Very useful if you need to take the installer to court.

For any Insulation work, you can go to the National Insulation Association provided that the trader who has done the installation is a member.

Step 3 -

Authorities:

In all cases, if the complaint is still unresolved then you should seek advice from your local Trading Standards Office or Citizens' Advice Bureau. They will give you free advice and may take up your complaint for you.

Step 4 -

Court: Failing all else you can still go to court to resolve your dispute. Details of small claims court and other procedures are given in the Legal Section of this site. You can also contact the Community Legal Service (justask.org.uk) that gives access to free advice. Otherwise your local Citizens' Advice Bureau will give you advice and will sometimes organise free legal representation for you.
